After a horrendous two days laying in bed I finally watching back the lesson on little wonders, I’ve been able to start brainstorming some ideas for my project, which is very exciting!
So far …
My little wonders are:
Different perspectives from the audience
Why do we collaborate?
working outside the normal 9-5
Meeting different people
can you always learn and progress
what does meeting my potential look like
My big questions are:
Letting people be individual
Judged less on looks and body image, more on talent
Making auditions affordable (travel, headshots, etc)
Age not being asked at auditions (unless under 18)
Pay gaps and why some skills should be considered a lesser skill
I feel like I am starting to have some potential avenues to explore which mades me very excited
I love your thought about making auditions more afforadable! This is something I hadn't thought about but the cost of travel, headshots and any materials you need certainly add up! Body image in the industry is something I researched for module 1 and it's amazing how it's made to be an okay thing to judge somebody on.

DeleteOh pay gaps, dont get me started on that one! A former employee of mine paid each performer drastically different, especially dancers compared to singers, or women compared to the men. Why is this fair?
ReplyDeleteexactly !!! they pay gap I have found most frustrating is if your a dancer who can do another skill or a skill who can dance. the gap is crazy and you end up doing the same job anyway !
DeletePay gaps! I thought this wouldn't be such a problem now I'm teaching as it was when I was performing but how wrong I was! Also, the working outside of 9-5, I feel there's only a certain amount of time one can tolerate working unsociable hours constantly.

DeleteYes many discrepancies in private dance school teaching- it's a free for all really with no regulation. And yes totally agreed you give up so much as a performer and don't get much sympathy if you want to prioritise an important event!
DeleteI feel like we have a similar outlook on people being judged on body image and looks... it feels like in 2023 this should no longer be an issue, yet I feel like its getting bigger and bigger. I went to see phantom yesterday there was barely anyone above a size 6 if

DeleteI agree with both your's and Isabella's points about the judgment that we are subjected too by the performing arts industry. It makes me think of a conversation I had with someone a few days ago, as the conversation moved onto my work as a dancer, I mentioned some of the things that happened in rehearsals for Swan Lake, and she said " I really enjoyed that show, but hearing about the things that happen makes me not want to watch the show." It made me realize how often we normalize things that are bad about the industry when we shouldn't, but also that as people become more connected by social media perhaps this will have a positive effect on audiences pushing for change from the outside, as well people pushing for change from within the industry.
